MUMBAI: Dr Trupti Bane, one of two women directors of PMC Bank arrested in the Rs 6,670 crore loan fraud case is a gynaecologist with a public hospital, the police said.
The Esplanade Court on Wednesday sent both to police custody till December 11. Another arrested director, Mukti Bavisi, was not produced in court as she was under medical observation at GT Hospital for health issues. She will be produced in court after discharge.
Another arrested person, Jagdish Mookhey(70), was a member of the audit panel in PMC Bank since 2005, while Dr Bane(55) was a member of the recovery and loan advances panels. Bavisi (55) was a member of the loan and advances panel.
The economic offences wing arrested them for their alleged role in the case. They are accused of not exercising due diligence in granting and recovery of loans, an official said. “The three were questioned about the bank’s discrepancies in audit/loans and advances portfolios and allegations of huge amounts of loans sanctioned and disbursed to HDIL. They could not provide satisfactory explanations,” said an officer.
The officer said that the money trail to the accused’s coffers through crime proceeds of HDIL need to be checked. “We need to question them,” said the officer.
The police learnt that Surjit Singh Arora, another director, now in jail, had received Rs 25 lakh from HDIL, which had taken a loan of Rs 4,300 crore. He used to run a business and showed transactions with HDIL. The…
